The International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) and the editors of Agricultural Economics invite submissions for a special issue dedicated to Latin America. This initiative follows recent board meetings identifying the region as having low representation in the journal. The goal is to foster deeper engagement with regional researchers and increase the global visibility of their contributions to the field.

Scope and Inclusivity We seek papers that align with the broad scope of Agricultural Economics: “from consumption and nutrition to land use and the environment, at every scale of analysis from households to markets and the macro-economy. Applicable methodologies include econometric estimation and statistical hypothesis testing, optimization and simulation models, descriptive reviews and policy analyses. We particularly encourage submission of empirical work that can be replicated and tested by others."

We welcome submissions from scholars globally and we specifically encourage the participation of researchers based in Latin America. We also strongly encourage submissions from early-career researchers, including PhD students and postdoctoral scholars from the region who are currently studying or working abroad.

Regional Workshop To facilitate scholarly exchange, authors of accepted papers or papers invited for resubmission will be invited to a workshop in the region in early 2027. The workshop will provide in-depth feedback from the journal’s co-editors and IAAE board members. To support participation, the IAAE will fund travel and accommodation for one author per accepted paper from the region. PhD and postdoctoral students from Latin America currently working abroad will also be considered for travel support to facilitate their ongoing connection to the regional research community. Expressions of interest to hold the workshop from universities in the region are welcomed.

Submission Process The submission portal opens on March 15, 2026. Authors should submit manuscripts via the Agricultural Economics online submission portal and select the "Latin America Special Issue" option.

Submission Deadline: September 15, 2026.

Review Process: Submissions will undergo expedited peer review, with initial decisions expected within two months.

While all are welcome to submit papers, given Uma’s commitment to mentoring, we particularly encourage submissions from scholars working in academic institutions in the Global South, as well as early career researchers from across the world. Shortlisted papers will be invited for a Workshop, where authors will get an opportunity to present their papers and receive detailed feedback from experts in the field. All the shortlisted papers will be invited to revise their papers (based on the feedback) and then submit the revised paper for the Special Issue of Agricultural Economics. The revised submissions will undergo double-blind peer review as per the Agricultural Economics process; and only those that are accepted through peer review will be published.

With only about two weeks to go until ICAE 2024 will formally be opened in New Delhi, India, IAAE is happy to announce that the free ICAE 2024 Mobile App for convenient access to the conference program on your smart phone (Apple and Android) is now available for download. The Program will start with several very interesting Pre-Conference Workshops on 2 August 2024. The formal Opening Plenary of ICAE 2024 will be in the morning of 3 August 2024. Directly after the Opening, in another Plenary Session, Uma Lele will give her Presidential Address and Tom Hertel will present the Elmhirst Memorial Lecture.

Note from the ICAE 2024 Program Chair, and IAAE President-Elect:

In about three months from now, IAAE’s Cowbell will ring to mark the formal opening of the 32^nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) to be held in New Delhi, India (2-7 August 2024). We are all very excited to meet again for this conference in-person for the first time after six years. As you know, ICAE is a triennial conference, but in 2021 it had to be held virtually due to the pandemic. It is really high time for an in-person international jamboree of agricultural economists.

The conference theme “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems” could not be more topical. Ideas on how to achieve global food and nutrition security and improve people’s wellbeing and resilience within the planetary boundaries are urgently needed. Our profession has a key role to play in terms of coming up with such ideas and helping to implement them at various scales. ICAE 2024 will be a landmark event for taking stock of what our agricultural economics profession has to offer in this regard.

We are putting together a truly exciting program with an excellent and diverse lineup of speakers, including many renowned scholars and rising stars from all parts of the world. In addition to the names and topics of the plenary sessions, invited panels, and pre-conference workshops, which can already be found on the ICAE 2024 website, we have accepted around 500 contributed papers, 360 contributed posters, and 58 Organized Symposia after a competitive peer-review process.

Thanks to the generous support of various sponsors, we can also allocate around 120 travel grants to early-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries with accepted research contributions. Note that these travel grants go to researchers from over 30 different countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, around half of them female. On top, support will be provided to many Indian scholars to participate in ICAE 2024.

ICAE 2024 will be an exciting academic event. At the same time, thanks to the hard work of the Local Organizing Committee it will be a memorable social event with plenty of opportunities for informal networking with colleagues from all parts of the world. In addition to the daily lunches and coffee breaks, there will be one opening reception, one conference dinner, organized cultural tours in Delhi and surroundings, and one additional off-site dinner – all included in the conference registration fee.

Uma Lele receives an Honorary Doctorate at Stellenbosch University

On Stellenbosch University in South Africa bestowed the degree Doctor of Science in Agriculture (DScAgric), honoris causa, on our President, Uma Lele, at a graduation ceremony on 28 March, 2023 for “her visionary leadership in the theory and practice of rural development globally and her pursuit to influence public policy through rigorous empirical research.”

The commendatio read in part:

Dr Uma Lele is a leader in the field of economic development. Over five decades, this independent scholar and development economist has accumulated a wealth of experience in research, operations, policy analysis and evaluation at the World Bank, universities and international organisations. She has consistently been at the forefront of new departures in the theory and best practice of rural development, continuously challenging the status quo and pushing the boundaries in her search for a more meaningful path to development. Her body of work is characterised by the constant endeavour to influence public policy through rigorous empirical research.

The first woman to be awarded a PhD in agricultural economics by Cornell University, Lele is the current president of the International Association of Agricultural Economists and is affiliated with the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi.

The International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) will sponsor the attendance of early career scholars at the upcoming AAAE & AEASA Conference in Durban to the tune of $25 000. This sponsorship will cover the travel, accommodation, and registration expenses for a selected number of early career scholars whose Contributed Papers have been accepted for the conference. This funding will complement other funds raised by the AAAE and AEASA for this purpose and will be awarded under the same conditions as part of the selection process for Contributed Papers. Early career scholars are encouraged to apply and take advantage of this opportunity to participate in a premier academic event and connect with peers from across the globe.

NEWLY ELECTED IAAE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

On behalf of the IAAE Board, I am pleased to announce the winners of the recent online elections for the IAAE Board of Directors for 2021-2024.

The successful candidates were:

PRESIDENT-ELECT:

Matin Qaim: Matin Qaim is a Professor of International Food Economics at the University of Goettingen, Germany. His main research interests relate to food security and sustainable development, focusing on agriculture-nutrition linkages and the role of technical and institutional change. He has served the IAAE Board of Directors (2018-2021) as a Member-At-Large, and the broader profession in various capacities. Matin’s vision is to make the IAAE a “home” association for all scholars interested in economics and/or social sciences perspectives on sustainable food systems and the broader bioeconomy in low-, middle-, and high-income countries to increase IAAE’s visibility beyond the agricultural economics discipline.

SECRETARY-TREASURER:

Stephan von Cramon-Taubadel: Stephan von Cramon-Taubadel has served as Secretary-Treasurer since 2015. He has held the chair for Agricultural Policy at the University of Göttingen since 1999. He was editor of Agricultural Economics, the official journal of the IAAE, from 2000 to 2006, organized the contributed papers for the IAAE triennial conference in Beijing in 2009, and was a Member-at-Large on the IAAE Board of Directors from 2012 to 2015. Stephan’s research focuses on the analysis of agricultural policies and the empirical study of price transmission and market integration. As Secretary-Treasurer, Stephan is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the association’s activities. He promises to continue to do his best to ensure that IAAE operations run smoothly in both more and less challenging times, to keep IAAE on course and facilitate projects and activities that benefit members.

MEMBERS-AT-LARGE

Tahirou Abdoulaye: Tahirou Abdoulaye is an Agricultural Economist at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). He is the Director for the IITA Sahel Hub based in Bamako, Mali. His research work covers a wide range of rural economic issues, including seed systems, farm-level efficiency and technology evaluation and transfer. His more recent research interest focuses on innovation systems and how they can help increase technology uptake by smallholder farmers. Tahirou promises to leverage the opportunities and responsibilities that come with board membership, to give back to the association through the direct work of the Board as well as mentoring new young members. As a firm believer in diversity, which has for many years pushed him to the association, which he opines has strength in its diversity, he promises to work to preserve and reinforce this diversity of membership, issues, and topics.

Jill McCluskey: Jill J. McCluskey is Regents Professor and Director of the School of Economic Sciences at Washington State University. McCluskey’s research focuses on product quality and reputation, sustainable labelling, consumer preferences for new technology, and representation of women in STEM. She is an incoming Editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, past President and Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and Fellow of the Western Agricultural Economics Association. Jill wants to see IAAE create more opportunities to expand research and collaboration, including additional inter-conference symposia and other events. She promises to work with multilateral organizations to obtain resources for people in developing countries to participate at IAAE meetings and initiate research collaboration and exchange of knowledge. She believes that IAAE could remain attractive to new members while maintaining current members by providing professional outlets, information and exciting research, opportunities for professional recognition at all levels, and networking opportunities.

Wendy J. Umberger: Wendy J. Umberger is a Professor of agriculture and food economics in the School of Economics and Public Policy and is the Foundation Executive Director of the Centre for Global Food and Resources at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Wendy is a Distinguished Fellow of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) and served as AARES President from 2016-2017. Wendy believes that for IAAE to remain relevant for current and future members, the association must continue to adapt by understanding the members’ heterogeneous needs and consider opportunities to attract new members. She believes there are opportunities to provide additional value to members and grow and diversify membership without significant additional investment, primarily through collaboration with other professional associations/societies to offer smaller focused conferences, symposiums and workshops, including virtually, to increase accessibility. Wendy would like to further operationalize newer IAAE initiatives such as the “thematic groups” and the International Committee on Women in Agricultural Economics (ICWAE). As a Board member, she desires to help address the dynamic and unique needs of members, raise the profile of the IAAE, and ensure that the association is inclusive and diverse.

These new members will join President Uma Lele  (currently President-Elect), Past President Nick Vink (currently President), and Stephan von Cramon-Taubadel to form the Board of Directors from the end of the upcoming virtual conference.

• The paper must be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF and must be anonymous.
• The paper should not exceed 10,000 words, including everything (figures, tables, references, etc.), 12 pt. font size and double spaced.
• The abstract text may not exceed 200 words.
• The submitter must affirm:
  • The work adheres to the strictest ethical standards.
  • The presenting author is committed to review up to four other papers.
  • The presenting author will register for the conference before 15 June 2021.

• To assist in the assignment of reviewers, the submitter must:

PUBLICATION OPTIONS

Revised versions of the Plenary papers are expected to be published in a special issue of IAAE's Agricultural Economics edited by the President Elect.

All papers accepted for ICAE 2021 will be made available through AgEconSearch for ease of access and to encourage citations. This type of preprint is not a publication and so should allow publication in other outlets, including Agricultural Economics. If issued as Working Papers in NBER or the World Bank, or discussion papers in IFPRI they are a step towards publication in peer-reviewed journals.

All contributed papers will be subject to a double-blind review. Successful papers will be streamed into the oral or visual (poster) sessions by the review committee and Program Organizer.

ORGANIZED SYMPOSIUM INSTRUCTIONS

Proposals must include:

• The title of proposed symposium
• Name(s), affiliation(s), and contact details of the organizer(s) and chairperson(s)
• The author(s), title, and abstract of each of the short presentations (one author with affiliation and contact email should be indicated as presenter)
• Name(s), affiliation(s), and contact details of one or two discussants, who should be different from the presenters
  
• Intended target audience
  
• Confirmation that all participants have agreed to be listed and to attend without financial support linked to this proposal
• Extended abstract of up to 800 words describing the idea, objective, relevance, originality, and format of the overall session. (Reminder: Remove all references to authorship in the extended abstract).

Organized Symposia proposals can be from any field of agricultural economics and related disciplines. They should focus on a specific theme and be of interest to a broader academic or policy audience. The 90-minute sessions typically feature three to four short presentations on various aspects of the chosen theme, followed by comments from one or two assigned discussants and open discussion involving the audience. Variations of this format are possible, such as moderated panel discussions on a specific theme with short inputs from the panelists, but in any case, sufficient time should be reserved for open discussion with the audience.

Innovative themes and proposals that look at important academic and policy issues from new angles are particularly welcome. Proposals involving diverse groups of presenters and participants will be favored in the selection process. No individual will be allowed to participate as organizer and/or presenter in more than two Organized Symposia.

Please note that inclusion of an Organized Symposium into the Conference Program will be contingent on all listed presenters/discussants/chairs being registered for ICAE 2021 by 15 June 2021.

Contributed Papers and Organized Symposium submissions

The deadline for submission of papers and symposia has been extended to Thursday, April 15, 2021 to allow more time for submissions. All proposals already submitted for review remain eligible for selection. To that effect, we are extending the opportunity to those who may wish to update and/or revise their submissions until the above deadline.

While we are still finalizing the registration fee, the good news is that the fee will be substantially lower than usual. We are also still exploring fundraising opportunities to help sponsor participation by early-career academics and professionals, especially those from low- and lower-middle-income countries.

An important quality characteristic of scientific research is that it is falsifiable and replicable. If findings from scientific articles are not replicable or are not attempted to be falsified, this renders conclusions less reliable. This is especially relevant in the field of agricultural economics research, where scientific results are frequently used to design or modify policies. Replication studies offer the potential to gain new insights from answering previously answered research questions by (1) applying the same or similar methods to other data sets or (2) applying alternative or more appropriate (new) methods to existing data sets or modeling frameworks. This contributes to the assessment of the robustness of earlier research findings

AAEA invites submissions to a special issue on ‘Replications in Agricultural Economics’ in the journal Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy (AEPP). With this special issue, we aim to initiate a new research stream in agricultural economics and foster the use of replication as structural element of our discipline.
